How Google Trends Can Turbo Charge Your Event Ticket Research

The Google Trends Indicator is a new feature which has been added to Box Office Fox so that you can quickly identify how popular a search for an artist or an event is on Google Trends. Google Trends is a near realtime record of the relative popularity of a search term. When the Superbowl isn’t a month or two away there is very little interest in that search term but when the event is a week or two away.

Take a look at this screenshot from within Google trends for an example:

OK, now imagine this: You can know what artists and performances are getting lots of search interest thanks to promotions on radio, Facebook, posters, whatever.

In the database view we present Google Trends scores are on a scale of 1 to 5:

• Blank: Unsure. Not enough data to report (not a good sign for resale value).
• 1: This artist is getting minimal search traffic. Very few people are searching for them.
• 2: This artist is getting a little search traffic.
• 3: This artist is mainstream and getting searched frequently.
• 4: This artist is very hot and is getting more than usual search traffic.
• 5: Reserved for the most Googled artists. The holy grail. Very few artists have this much search interest.

What does it look like in the Ticket On Sale List?

For members with a Broker Membership you will see the Google trends column towards the left side of the grid view. By default it is placed between the AI column and the Shazam score indicator and just before the On Sale date column.

How does Fox use Google Trends data to make ticket flipping easier?

We are able to determine a score for each artist based on their recent performance in Google trends. This number gives you a quick way to show artist popularity – this number will rise and fall with time and does depend entirely on internet searches. What’s high is hot, what’s low is not.

On a single event detail page you can find the Google Trends indicator next to the Shazam score and the Tour History report.
